Home Up Education

There are hundreds of museums in Germany. Here are my four favorites.

The Deutsche Museum in Munich is obviously the best. To think that they still have the laboratory apparatus used by Georg Simon Ohm to develop Ohms Law is amazing to me.

You could spend days wandering around a 16km path spread over six floors in the largest technical museum in the world. The line-up of exhibits features just about everything mankind has ever invented in order to make life easier. Machines and installations from mining to astronomy; from under the earth up to the stars, it's all there. One of the most fascinating departments (recently moved to its own building on the other side of town) is devoted entirely to transport. There's just about every kind of boat you can imagine including an Indian canoe, a luxurious black velvet-seated gondola and a breathtaking 19th-century German sailing ship. Train enthusiasts will love the first German Lokomobil from 1862. Live demonstrations and do-it-yourself, hands-on experiments make this museum fun for all ages. More

Schwarzwald Museum in Triberg

A mountain chain rose all around it and one can hear the roaring of the torrent of the waterfall" said a traveller describing Triberg.

In the middle of the little town with Germany´s highest waterfall one finds the Black Forest Museum. All the typical attractions of the Black Forest can be found here on the 1600 square meter area.

Dark forests, peaceful valleys, solitary farmhouses clinging to the slopes of steep mountains are representative for the Black Forest. As a

regional museum the Black Forest Museum displays a unique collection of cultural aspects, tradition and everyday objects. The museum presents arts and crafts as well as the ingenuity of the Black Forest villagers and their arduous work.

The trade hall of Triberg, built in the 19th century, accommodates the museum since 1936. Workshops for wooden-ware, clockmakers, and straw braiders were reconstructed here. These crafts were developed because of the abundance of wood and the poverty of the population. The successsful straw braiding industry arose from the supplementary income activity of rural workers.

One hears music from the famous Black Forest orchestrions throughout the whole museum. The visitors can study the variety of the minerals from the Black Forest in a reconstructed mine.

Formerly the glass- and clockmerchants brought the news from all over Europe to this area. Since the 18th century thousand of travellers pilgered to the church „Maria in der Tanne" in Triberg. In the time of the industrialization the image of the idyllic Black Forest attracted more and more tourists. The waterfall became the landmark of the region. After the opening of the Black Forest railroad in 1873, Triberg developed into an international winter sports and health resort. The journey with the railroad through it´s tunnels and valleys was soon an attraction. The route of the Black Forest railroad can be admired in a large diorame in the museum. More
