Entertainment in Italy Online
Events and Entertainment in Italy
Monuments, museums, hotels and restaurants are all very well, but if you
want to add some colour and enchantment to your holiday in Italy, do as the
Italians do, and seek out some entertainment.
Italy has the most famous opera house in the world, and an unrivalled
artistic tradition. It also has colorful festivals, historical pageants and
rituals, and one of the world's finest football leagues. There's something for
everyone, and I strongly advise you to sample some of the wealth of options
Italy presents.

Opera in Italy
Just like the cliches say, opera is at the heart of Italian culture. You
really can walk along tiny side-streets, and hear cheerfully-sung arias issuing
from shop doorways.
Ballet in Italy
Ballet in Italy has a long and proud past, although nowadays it lacks the
popular appeal of opera. The best ballet is to be seen in Milan at La Scala,
where the performers and shows are world-class. Rome offers the ballet of the
Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. There are some good companies in Italy, but they
frequently lose their best dancers to more prestigious overseas companies. There
are quite a few touring companies, and in summer months there are many outdoor
performances and festivals. Highlight of the festival season is the Festival
dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. The charming Umbrian hill-town gets taken over by
music and dance of an international standard. In 2002, dance highlights included
Nederlands Dans Theater and a gala featuring dancers from the Royal Ballet, the
Bolshoi, the Kirov and others.

Festivals in Italy
Italians are very keen on festivals and celebrations of all sorts. Festivals
range from local religious processions to avant-garde musical events. There is
something for everyone, whether you prefer sampling different wines or watching
wild horse races.

The Aosta Valley Region offers, in every season, many kinds of
entertainment: from easy walks to high mountain excursions; airplane and
helicopter flights; discotheques scattered all over the different valleys, and
the thrill of gambling at the Saint-Vincent casino, for the lovers of
night-life. In winter time, the "Saison Culturelle" suggests many

INTRODUCTION
As you enter St. Mark's Square, you pass
two massive free-standing columns. At the top of one is St.
Theodore, a military leader who played an important role in early Venetian
history. Atop the other column is a winged lion, the mythical
guardian of Venice and the symbol of St. Mark.
The architecture is a reproduction of
the Doges Palace in Venice. Since it would be virtually impossible
to find an exact duplicate of the marble, the Disney Imagineers created
their own. In this case, the marble is actually fiberglass (covering
brick supports) that has been painted and specially treated to resemble
the real thing.
ATTRACTIONS
The shops and architecture
are the featured attractions in Italy.
DINING
L’Originale Alfredo di
Roma Ristorante is designed in
rich Florentine style. Alfredo's is based on a famous Roman
restaurant of the same name. Fettucine Alfredo is the restaurant
specialty.
ENTERTAINMENT
Character
Masquerade are very entertaining to watch as they pose and dance
to classic Italian music!
Imaginum, a living statue act, has moved from the France pavilion
to Italy, as well.
TOURING TIPS
The Pavilion includes kumquat trees,
olive trees and grapevines as well as several "container
gardens."
Epcot
International Flower and Garden Festival - The
brand new beautiful patio garden is not to be missed (the sculptures are
actually part of an old Regis and Kathy Lee set!)
Holidays
from Around the World features storytellers in each country.
In Italy, La
Befana makes appearances throughout the afternoon. La
Befana is the good witch who brings gifts to children on the Epiphany,
January 6th.
KIDS
AND CHARACTERS
Each
of the World Showcase countries has a special "KIDCOT"
area that provides an opportunity for your child to interact with a native
of the country you are visiting.
Epcot Passports
are great fun for kids as they have them stamped at each pavilion around World
Showcase.
Disney Characters appear "On
Holiday" in their sightseeing bus around World Showcase. Check your
Daily Epcot Guide Map for times and locations.
SHOPPING
Delizie
Italiane - Italian chocolates, candies.
Il Bel Cristallo - Murano crystal, Capodimonte florals and
figures, glassware, decorative items.
La Cucina Italiana - Gourmet foods and cookware, pastries,
wines.
INTERESTING
FACTS
The statues on the Doges Palace
are hollow and are held in place by steel rods which run through the base
into the statues themselves.
The city of Venice was the inspiration
for the Italian Pavilion.
A smaller version of Campanile includes
an angel sculpted using a model of the original and covered in gold leaf.
The sea god Neptune is featured at the pavilion’s fountain.
The
garden is more like a garden patio: blue, white and pink hanging baskets
add color to the large buildings and garden walls. Citrus trees,
such as orange and lemon, along with other Mediterranean trees, dominate
the landscape. Flowering plants in authentic containers decorate the
plaza.
